Virginia B Crawford
Virginia B Crawford was welcomed into this world on January 26, 1941, to the union of John and Maggie Burnette.
Virginia accepted Jesus Christ at a very early age, and remained a stead fast believer throughout her life. She consistently gave testimony to the many blessings of trusting the Lord and to the power of prayer; “put your trust in the Lord and you will always be guided to do what the Lord wants you to do”.
Virginia’s major works, deeds, and contributions include:
- Five decades as an educator; teaching children to achieve, read and write.
- Being one of the pioneers in starting the “Head Start Program”, that sought to help educate kids in her local community, then in Quitman County at large.
- Being a part of evolving the Head Start program to include reading, math, and science.
- Receiving a degree in Early Childhood Development from Coahoma Community College where she was a leader in her class.
- Recipient of numerous awards, certificates and praises for her work and advocacy for children; and her many years of service to her church, Greenhill M. B. Church in Marks, MS.
Virginia was joined in holy matrimony to Robert Crawford on April 23, 1963. In this union of 55 years, they raised seven daughters.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Crawford, and her oldest daughter, Joyce Ann Rogers.
Virginia leaves to cherish her memories, six daughters: Dasie Mae Richmond of Bloomington, MN; Mandy Rogers of Bossie City, LA; Carol (Tyrone) Smith of Clarksdale, MS; Patricia (Michael) Amos of Arcadia, CA; Janice Crawford of Bloomington, MN; and Carlotta Crawford of Brooklyn Park, MN.
Virginia also leaves two sisters, Lucille Brown of Chicago, IL and Martha Staten of Marks, MS; one brother Andrew Burnette of Sachse, TX; an aunt Robie Auger of Anaheim, CA; one brother-in-law Bennie Lee Crawford of Southaven, MS; one sister-in-law Lela Johnson of Marks, MS; three aunts: Eva Gorman of Berrien Springs, MI; Eva Childress-Gorman of Clarksdale, MS; and Inez Burnette of Marian, IN; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
